Getting clothes made in Vietnam: how it actually works
Timeline, fittings, fabrics and payment — built from what
426 shops actually do, according to their customers, not from brochures.
The short answer
Arrive with 2–3 days left in town: order on day one, first fitting
within 24 hours, final tweaks the day after. 192 of the shops we checked
routinely deliver in 24–48 h, 313 include free adjustments, and
193 will bring the finished clothes to your hotel.
Getting clothes made in Vietnam, step by step
Step 1
Come prepared
Bring reference photos of exactly what you want — shops copy
garments and screenshots remarkably well. Better still, bring a garment that already fits
you perfectly. Vague descriptions produce vague clothes.
Step 2
Order early, fit often
Order on your FIRST day in town, never the last. The rhythm:
measurements day one, first fitting within 24 h, adjustments the next day. Speak up at
fittings — 313 shops adjust free until it's right, but only if you say what
feels off. Shoulder fit matters most; it's the one thing hard to alter later.
Step 3
Talk fabric before price
The fabric decides both the price and whether you'll wear it at
home. Linen and cotton for the tropics; wool blends for suits you'll use in winters back
home. Ask to feel two or three grades — the price gaps come from the bolt, not the labor.
Step 4
Pay like a local
Deposit around half, balance at pickup. Cash preferred nearly
everywhere (27 shops are documented cash-only). Ordering several pieces?
Ask for the multi-piece price before agreeing to anything — see
what travelers actually pay across Vietnam.
Step 5
No time? Delegate the logistics
193 shops deliver to hotels and 173 ship
internationally through courier partners — reviews report orders reaching home in one to two
weeks. Get the tracking number before you fly.
